Workshops
Creative Workshops
As part of our project, we ran several creative workshops. Three of these took place online (see below for more info) and four took place in person at two wonderful partner venues, The Word in South Shields and the Lit & Phil Newcastle. Participants used either their own ephemera or ephemera related to Newcastle and Tyneside in the First World War as inspiration for developing short pieces of writing, ranging from dramatic monologues to poetry and short fiction.
In April 2024, we launched an anthology, Fragments: An Anthology (digital version), that showcases some of this work alongside contributions from digital workshop participants.
We are also now developing a toolkit to allow anyone to run similar workshops for their community group, school or organisation. In the meantime, you might find our visual summaries below helpful. Images designed by Laura Sorvala.

Digital Community Workshops
Facilitated by the wonderful writer and illustrator Felicity Tattersall, our Exeter team, Dr Chris Kempshall and Professor Catriona Pennell, also hosted a series of digital workshops centred around the stories we can tell about everyday objects relating to war. Further info about what these workshops entailed can be found below. The three short videos explain the project, the workshops, and what ‘ephemera’ actually is.
Dr Chris Kempshall gives a brief overview of the project and what it’s all about.
In this short video, ephemera expert Ann-Marie Foster explains what ephemera is.
Meet Felicity Tattersall, our workshop facilitator, and get a little insight into how the workshops will work.
